ASML is a leading global supplier of advanced technology systems to the semiconductor industry. The Enterprise Architect plays an important role in coaching the organization through its IT professionalization journey, based on both solid understanding of content and strong communication and leadership skills.
About ASML
ASML’s hardware, software, and services enable leading semiconductor companies worldwide to increase the value while reducing the cost of silicon chips. The high-tech company, boasting over 42 thousand employees, makes machines that electronics manufacturers use to produce chips – including the software to run them. Advancements such as 5G connectivity, autonomous cars, and artificial neural networks rely heavily on ASML’s solutions.
Chips made by ASML’s machines are also used to solve some of society’s toughest challenges, ranging from advanced medical applications to renewable energy generation and usage. ASML’s mission is to unlock the potential of people and society, by pushing technology to new limits. ASML’s latest innovation is Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) Lithography Technology, which no other player in the world is capable of. It allows ASML to do big things on a tiny scale.
“2022 was another strong year for us, ending with total net sales of €21.2 billion, a gross margin of more than fifty percent, and a record backlog of €40.4 billion.” – Peter Wennink, CEO of ASML
Nearing its fortieth anniversary, ASML is still growing fast. The company credits its success to its strong entrepreneurial culture and brilliant high-tech engineering, but strong software development practices are becoming increasingly crucial. The IT Architecture team is responsible for professionalizing and scaling the company’s IT development environments, with a focus on information management, automation, and optimization.
In the team, specialized domain architects (focused on applications, cloud & infrastructure, or data & analytics) cooperate closely with enterprise architects who maintain an overview of, and also steer, the architectural standards within ASML. The new Enterprise Architect focuses specifically on process design and standardization for software development and CI/CD.
Vacancy: Enterprise Architect
The Enterprise Architect will maintain and mature the reference architecture for the development environments, to make sure that they support the needs of the various development communities across ASML. From a strong EA-vision and strategy, they will define the governance structure as well as the roadmap to migrate and consolidate the various environments, including transitional plateaus and conditions for success. Ultimate goal is to increase the maturity of ASML’s development infrastructure, to accelerate the innovation power of the development teams.
Although the new Enterprise Architect focuses mainly on software development and the development infrastructure (CI/CD) in particular, their mandate to increase the maturity of enterprise architecture and development standards reaches beyond this scope. The Enterprise Architect raises the bar when it comes to setting architecture standards and implementing best practices. The priorities for ASML’s IT journey are digitization (of processes, products and user experience); transitioning from a project-oriented to a product-centric IT organization; a multi-hybrid cloud strategy; a strong data foundation; and cyber-resilience.
The Enterprise Architect coaches the business in its IT transformation journey. Experience with transformations and the ability to connect and communicate with the business is key. Their high level of flexibility and capability to influence stakeholders without forcing, allows them to gain traction in ASML’s unique culture and organizational structure. They also have the creativity to tailor industry standards to ASML’s setup.
“In order to take our enterprise architecture to the next level, the Enterprise Architect needs to be both strategic and pragmatic. Combining an excellent understanding of best practices in enterprise architecture with the ability to work result-driven, in short sprints, and in cooperation with several stakeholders is crucial to being successful in this role.” – Frank Ritzen, Head of IT Architecture of ASML
This role combines strong knowledge of software development, (cloud) infrastructure and enterprise architecture with excellent leadership and stakeholder interaction skills, and the ability to think from the perspective of the business. The right candidate enjoys working creatively and bottom-up with a multidisciplinary group of colleagues. The Enterprise Architect’s ambition and curiosity play a stronger role than their ego.
The Enterprise Architect is part of the IT Enterprise Architecture group, they will be reporting to the Head of IT Architecture. The Enterprise Architect works with colleagues from their own team as well as with business architects to optimize IT architecture for ASML’s key capabilities. This is a unique opportunity for a senior candidate to have a lot of impact in an inspiring organization while actively expanding their own skillset, and potentially growing into a leadership role in the future.
