About Van Oord
Maritime ingenuity is at the heart of the family-owned engineering firm Van Oord. Born out of the historical struggle between the Dutch and the North Sea, Van Oord is a Dutch, family-owned enterprise. Van Oord employs over 54,000 professionals, representing eighty-four nationalities. The company currently has 186 projects in production across thirty-six countries, worldwide. With the purpose of generating a better world for future generations, Van Oord focuses on two business units: Dredging and Infrastructure, and Offshore Energy.
The Business Unit Offshore Energy is actively involved in the energy transition with its comprehensive engineering, procurement, and construction solutions for offshore wind projects. Van Oord not only has an abundance of top-notch expertise in-house, but also owns and operates a fleet that allows them to execute highly specialist projects to perfection.
In addition, Van Oord continues to become a financially smarter, more data-driven organization. The FP&A Team for the Offshore Energy business unit, led by Ruben Swart, will play a vital role in translating insights and team analyzes for decision-making and business development, providing senior management with long-term strategic advice.
Job description: FP&A Consultant
The FP&A Consultant is part of the Finance & Control organization of the Business Unit Offshore Energy, working closely with commercial and business development departments in the Business Unit, but also with other departments within Van Oord. The FP&A Consultant is one of the primary internal strategic advisors to senior management, funneling the team’s insights into actionable steps and – crucially – transforming Van Oord into a truly data-driven company.
Strategic insights
The FP&A Consultants are the internal advisors and business partners for the company’s senior management. They provide valuable financial and business insights and advice to drive decision-making and contribute to strategic processes, such as annual plans and the business unit’s long-term strategy.
These insights are based on data analyses, dashboarding, building financial models, and creating or assessing business cases. They support business development and participate in investment projects, performing portfolio and competitor analyzes and creating long-term forecasts. They also contribute to identifying and implementing process improvements, allowing Van Oord to achieve its strategic objectives efficiently and effectively.
Internal governance
The FP&A Consultant contributes to Van Oord’s effort toward effective and efficient internal (data) governance. This person coordinates an effective budgeting and reporting process, leads several internal process improvement projects from a finance or data perspective, and implements the Finance strategy in organization-wide projects. Van Oord is currently taking major steps in the field of digitization and data governance, in which the FP&A Consultant plays an important role as well.
“The right person for this role of course knows their way around an Excel sheet – but to be successful, this person also needs to be good at managing relationships. I am looking for someone who is eager to reach out to colleagues from within and outside the business unit to uncover data and understand complex processes. Further, this person should naturally have an interest in contributing to the energy transition.” – Ruben Swart, Director FP&A
The Candidate
The right candidate for this role is highly analytical and structured, has an entrepreneurial mindset, and is a strong communicator. Of course, the FP&A Consultant also has solid skills when it comes to finance, data analysis, and building (financial) models. They know how to present findings in a structured, compelling manner. This person needs to be a conceptual thinker, who can effectively communicate complex issues at all levels – but especially with senior management.
This strategically significant role is an exciting opportunity for a data-savvy professional with financial and strategic expertise, such as a (former) strategy consultant, management consultant, or business controller, to position themselves for growth in a family-owned industry leader with global activities and ambitions.
