Verra Mobility is a global frontrunner in smart cities, smart roads and the connected systems that tie them together seamlessly. The company is especially successful in the US and now expanding its European business. Verra Mobility is hiring a Director of Technology to build a strong tech team in Europe and propel innovation aimed at this market.

As a global leader in smart transportation, they connect people, technology, and data across the smart mobility ecosystem and their customized technology solutions solve complex transportation challenges. Their global presence in more than 15 countries and extensive partnerships with leading toll authorities, rental car fleet companies like Hertz, Enterprise, Sixt, and municipalities position them as a recognized leader in the smart mobility space.
Verra Mobility’s Government Solutions-customers consist of municipalities, school districts, and other entities. They install, maintain, and manage leading technology that positively impacts driver behavior and enhances road safety, such as red light, speed, and bus lane cameras. Verra Mobility provides their commercial clients (including rental car companies, fleet management companies, and large fleet operators) with technology to help them with a range of topics, such as managing tolls, violations, parking fines, and vehicle registrations.
Verra Mobility in Europe
Building on their success in the US, they are now creating a new international team in Amsterdam, which will focus on the European market. They have already laid the groundwork with a toll project in Madrid, international fine collection services, and a vehicle registration project for 400 European companies. Now, they are ready to really hit the ground running in Europe.
“Our European organization has a start-up energy and fast-paced mindset, but we can draw on the expertise and client base of a global industry leader.” – Tsjerk Roelfzema, General Manager, SVP Europe
Vacancy: Director of Technology
The new Director of Technology will be responsible for leading the technology initiatives in the European Commercial Services business unit to take the business into the future. This includes hands-on management of the software development team as well as evaluating and identifying the technology platforms that will drive business results in Europe and realizing their potential.
“Someone with the right experience can use their know-how to make adaptations fast. To do things smarter, better, more efficiently, with modernized tech; we can find the budget to do it and decisions get to be made quickly.” – Tsjerk Roelfzema, General Manager, SVP Europe
A seat at the table
The Director of Technology will be the most senior technology leader in Europe and a key member of the European leadership team, reporting to the General Manager Europe. The Director of Technology will work closely with a range of stakeholders, including the Vice President of Technology in the US, the Director of Product in Amsterdam, and cross-functional teams.
People leader
Verra Mobility uses third-party vendors when necessary. The Director of Technology is a ‘people’ leader, managing the inspired technology resources across Europe. This currently constitutes of a network of twenty dedicated experts, of which five are in-house. Over time, the Director of Technology will decrease dependency on external providers by building a strong in-house tech team in Europe. At the onset of employment, the organizational structure will be quite flat, meaning the Director of Technology will also act as a people manager, helping the team with aspects such as planning, problem solving, quality and performance.
Tolling, violations, and vehicle compliance
Verra Mobility’s market entry strategy for the European market focuses on software solutions for tolling, violations, and vehicle compliance. The Director of Technology will determine product strategies, map market requirements (e.g. privacy requirements, VAT schemes, currencies, and languages), and will have a customer-first approach. There is a lot of freedom for the Director of Technology to build on the products that are successful in the US and adjust them to the European market as well as drive innovation from scratch.
Although focused on software delivery, the ideal Director of Technology is comfortable with end-to-end technology stacks from edge platforms to centralized processing and payment solutions. Day-to-day activities may include, but are not limited to, platform planning and architecture design, capacity planning for new initiatives, participation in business execution strategy, workflow design, execution of onboarding plans, timeline/project schedule adherence, executive stakeholder communications, and organizational change management.
