Eneco is transitioning into a climate-neutral, digitally-led energy company. Its new product-centric digital division integrates product, data, and IT, whose teams support the product teams while aligning with the business strategy. The Engineering Manager for .NET oversees the Back-end Development teams and drives the IT backbone development for Eneco’s evolution.

About Eneco

Driven by its mission of ‘sustainable energy for everyone,’ Eneco empowers consumers and businesses to pursue sustainability in their homes, workplaces, and lifestyles. The energy company focuses mainly on the radical electrification of industry, mobility, and the buildings and structures in our environment, phasing out natural gas, and accelerating the adoption of sustainable heating solutions, such as geothermal energy, green gas, and green hydrogen.

Eneco operates in The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and the UK under the brands Eneco, AgroEnergy, LichtBlick, Oxxio, and WoonEnergie. Headquartered in Rotterdam, the company achieves annual growth, serves approximately 5.6 million customers and generated revenues of 5.2 billion euros in 2021. It produced a total of 14,735 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of energy, and over ten percent more than in 2020, with around seventy percent from wind and solar energy.

We need to take action now, to prevent the planet from warming beyond one-and-a-half degrees, and ensuring its habitability for future generations. Together with our customers, we strive to achieve climate neutrality by 2035. ” – As Tempelman, Chief Executive Officer of Eneco

Eneco’s digital products and propositions play a vital role to accelerate their energy transition and achieve the One Planet Plan. Their roadmap includes dynamic pricing by adjusting rates based on the current supply and demand of energy. As well as the Virtual Power Plant, a system that connects Eneco assets with third-party assets and enables Eneco to respond in real-time to energy demands.

Additionally, a platform for heat pumps that provides installers, technicians, and consumers with insights into the performance of heat pump installations, and an app-first service model are on their strategic agenda. To achieve these objectives, the digital organization is undergoing a thorough modernization that emphasizes product development closely aligning with the business and with top-tier engineering. The Engineering Managers will play a significant role in this transformative process.

Vacancy: Engineering Manager for .NET

The Engineering Manager for .NET will strategize performance, concurrency, availability, and maintainability, while developing Eneco’s digital products’ custom backend framework. This requires a robust track record, substantial hands-on technical expertise, and extensive experience in backend software engineering.

One of the major projects is the Virtual Power Plant. Meanwhile, the team will also be involved in building the backend for more than forty larger and smaller products and product families. And some of these are used daily, by millions of customers.

The Engineering Manager for .NET, along with their Team Leads, Principal Engineers and Solution Architects, will drive the development and guidance of a team of around fifty colleagues, who work throughout the Back-end Development Teams.

The preferred technology is the .NET framework, with a limited use of Java, which will likely be phased out in the near future. The Engineering Manager will also have, or develop, a vision for this transition. They will be responsible for the developing the .NET, Digital Core, Java, and DevOps Squads.

Strategic Importance: Transitioning to a Product-Led Approach
The Engineering Managers play a fundamental role in successfully executing Eneco’s transition and overall strategy, with a strong emphasis on digital. This involves a completely new, product-driven strategy and management structure, an initiative in which these Engineering Managers can actively contribute.

Four new Engineering Managers will each be completely responsible for team development and quality standards within their respective fields. Guided by the Engineering Managers, the teams work towards the technical-strategic vision, collaboratively formulated by the Engineering Managers, Head of Engineering, subject-matter Principal Engineers, and Team Leads.

Due to its ongoing transition, Eneco’s digital organization operates in a hybrid scenario, which is structured around four domains:

  • .NET Back End Engineering
  • Customer Platform Engineering
  • Front End and Mobile Engineering
  • Qualtiy Assurance and Testing

The Engineering Managers hold leadership roles with full HR responsibility, yet maintain an unwavering interest in the technical content. ” – Rick Molenaar, Head of Engineering of Eneco

This position is ideal for an engineering leader with outstanding achievements in the .NET and backend domain, coupled with substantial experience in leading large teams of specialists. This role is a unique opportunity to contribute significantly to the society-wide energy transition as well as to drive innovation within Eneco’s digital organization and its product-led business strategy.
