There are two clear eras: before and after the launch of bol.com. Since its inception in 1999, the company has continuously reinvented and developed both themselves and the retail market. The Strategy & Business Developer will consider the long-term strategy for various areas that are critical to bol.com’s future.
About bol.com
Bol.com really needs no introduction. The slogan “de winkel van ons allemaal” (the store for everyone) has long since proven true: truly everyone knows bol.com. It’s the largest online platform in the Netherlands and Belgium, where millions of consumers can choose from over 36 million products. That massive collection of products is sold in part by bol.com themselves but increasingly also by the 51,000 business partners who operate on the platform. Bol.com is growing fast and wants to continue that trend. But that means constantly looking ahead, into both the near and distant future. That’s the task set to the Strategy & Business Development team: 16 ambitious professionals working together to make a difference for the future of bol.com. And ultimately for their own futures, as well—in the past, the Strategy & Business Development team has proven to be a springboard to other great roles within the organization.
Vacancy: Strategy & Business Developer
What will the e-commerce landscape look like in five years? How will bol.com meet its ESG goals? What new consumer propositions and innovative business models can the company develop to make themselves and their partners even more successful? These are just a few of the fundamental issues and topics the Strategy & Business Development team focuses on every day. With a strategic bird’s-eye view and keen analytical skills, the Strategy & Business Developer will make a significant contribution to each project. They will closely monitor market developments, identify and analyze opportunities and threats, and still keep an eye on the financial impact for clients and partners. The projects awaiting the Strategy & Business Developer are diverse but always have a few things in common: they are taken on by multidisciplinary teams, they have a decisive impact on the future of bol.com, and there’s always communication at the highest level. The team or department the Strategy & Business Developer works with varies, but they’ will almost always have a seat at the table with senior management and/or the board of directors. The line to the top level is short: the Strategy & Business Developer reports to the Director of Strategy & Business Development, Vera Rensink, who reports directly to the CEO.
“As a Strategy & Business Developer, you’ll deal with issues that will determine our future. You’ll be consulted both for your strategic and conceptual skills as well as your tactical talents and guidance to make an impact. This role will also give you plenty of exposure to C-level and senior stakeholders.” — Vera Rensink, Director of Strategy & Business Development
Bol.com is a large organization with numerous internal and external stakeholders at all organizational levels. Navigating that can be pretty complex. The Strategy & Business Developer will be able to chart their course smoothly and efficiently. They aren’t afraid of critical questions but will always be able to give a clear answer, with data to back it up. The ideal candidate is someone with strong analytical skills and the execution to anchor ideas and projects effectively in the organization. They will be given plenty of space and opportunities to make that happen because at bol.com, autonomy is seen as a major asset.
