To further consolidate ING bank’s position in the international financial market, their Wholesale Bank architecture needs to be further simplified to support the digitalisation of customer journeys. The new Chief Architect will shape their vision of the future and guide a team of twenty architects to make its design decisions.

About ING Wholesale Banking

ING is a Dutch global financial institution providing retail and commercial banking services to customers in over forty countries. Today, banking landscape needs to change to cope with its ongoing regulations. ING is responding in a revolutionary way with a fully componentized architecture and a Think Forward strategy. This way, ING will create a differentiating customer experience for millions of customers worldwide while maintaining strict banking regulations.

ING Wholesale Banking is responsible for all interbank transactions for financing, lending, and trading between large corporates and other financial entities. It also provides the Global Treasury a solid foundation where consumer banking products are developed and financed.

Vacancy: Chief Architect

ING’s architecture strategy is to become more future-proof, future-oriented, proactive and a prominent internal business partner. The new Chief Architect will shape their vision to become the architecture of the future, as well as manage and guide the experienced team to make the vision come to life. This key role will ensure that ING maintains its reputation as the most innovative and agile bank, within regulatory boundaries and availability requirements.

The Chief Architect will report to the CIO and lead a team of about thirty people in the Amsterdam location. Their main challenge will be to shape ING’s architecture into one where customer and employee journeys can be re-imagined and digitilized. In addition, the IT landscape must be simplified and consolidated for regulations such as ESG, or Market innovations (i.e. SWIFT and T2 NextGen messaging) to be implemented in one place, rather than repeated in different systems. They have already developed a common Banking Technology Platform that must be adopted by ING Wholesale Banking as well.

ING Wholesale Banking owns hundreds of applications, and many are legacy systems. This means there is still a lot of work to be done to digitize all of their complex processes. And the new Chief Architect will need previous experience in this domain.

The Chief Architect will have a strong technical background and a proven track record of leadership. They will manage an experienced team, and help it to evolve while adding more diverse talent to make it more future-proof. This role requires experience in complex, international environments that are highly regulated and risk-, compliance-, and regulation-driven.

This is an excellent challenge for an architect with vision to contribute to the reliability of systems that play a significant role in international economic traffic runs, and on products used by millions of consumers every day.
