About Lebara
Lebara was founded in 2001 by Leon Rasiah, Baskaran Kandiah, and Ratheesan Yoganathan. This explains the origin of the name: Lebara is an acronym formed from the first letters of their last names. The three entrepreneurs had a mission: to revolutionize the telecom sector by offering customers an affordable and valuable alternative to established telecom providers. Twenty-five years later, that goal remains as relevant as ever, and Lebara aims to become the fastest-growing mobile network in Europe. In addition to the Netherlands, the company operates in Germany, France, Denmark, and the United Kingdom, with the latter, together with the Netherlands, forming its largest market.
Acquisition by Waterland
Lebara’s success stems from a clear value-for-money proposition, strong distribution, high customer satisfaction, and competitively priced offerings in a highly competitive market. After a period of changing ownership and a turbulent phase in which bondholders took control, the company was acquired by Waterland Private Equity in 2024. Under the guidance of this private equity investor, Lebara has embarked on its next phase of growth, focused on further professionalization and commercial expansion.
