About DuckDB Labs
DuckDB Labs is an innovative software company located at the Amsterdam Science Park, founded in 2021 as a spin-off from the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI). The founders, Hannes Mühleisen and Mark Raasveldt, are at the forefront of computer science. They combined their expertise to develop and support DuckDB: a globally leading open-source database system that is downloaded more than eight hundred thousand times per month. The software itself is freely available; DuckDB Labs provides commercial services around the software, enabling organizations to make their data processing more efficient and future-proof.

DuckDB is one of the fastest-growing and most popular database systems in the world. Its open-source nature makes the software freely accessible to everyone, contributing to its widespread and enthusiastic adoption by data analysts, developers, and researchers worldwide. Instead of relying on heavy cloud solutions or external systems, DuckDB runs locally—directly on the device where the data resides. This combination of ease of use, performance, and accessibility makes DuckDB a favorite among both start-ups and major tech companies.
Working at DuckDB Labs
At the office located at the Science Park in Amsterdam, around twenty people work—mainly technical specialists with a passion for database systems and open-source software. Several team members were personally involved in the development of DuckDB. The culture is informal, hands-on, and ambitious. The founders remain actively involved in the company: Hannes Mühleisen as CEO and Mark Raasveldt as CTO. Together with their team, they are not only building the technology but also shaping the future growth and direction of the organization.
