On a hot summer day, on their way to a swimming lake, the three future founders of the company hear a radio ad for muesli. It sparks a discussion among the students about advertising versus reality in muesli products. A later check at the supermarket shelf makes it clear: plenty of muesli brands, but varied ingredients? Nothing. This is exactly the gap the three want to fill, by letting people combine online what they really want in their muesli and having that individual muesli delivered straight to their door. That was the idea.
A first survey was disappointing. Asked whether they would be willing to buy their muesli online, exactly zero percent of several hundred respondents answered "yes." But in the spirit of Einstein, who held that an idea is worthless unless it first seems absurd, the three friends kept pursuing their "custom-mixed-muesli" alongside their studies. On 30 April 2007 they put their site, mymuesli.com, online from their shared student flat. Success came overnight. After just two weeks, stock was sold out. Every custom mix was weighed by hand, ingredient by ingredient, packed, and sent to customers with a personal greeting.
Since then, the company has grown far beyond that. Around 400 employees from over 30 nations work day after day on the perfect, individual muesli. Production takes place today in the middle of Passau, in the company's own muesli factory. A purpose-built muesli mixing machine handles the semi-automated filling of several thousand orders per day. This "Superbrain" mixes each of 566 quadrillion possible blends based on customer-specific barcodes. Only the very best goes in: regularly inspected, pure organic produce, from grains and nuts to seeds and fruit.
Beyond the legal requirements of the EC Organic Regulation, mymuesli has also deliberately chosen to join Biokreis. This organic farming association has set itself the goal of supporting organic farmers and organic food processors, connecting them regionally, and preserving traditional farming based on organic agriculture.
The company also repeatedly stands out for innovation around its range. In addition to porridge, bars, snacks and smoothie bowls, there are now even customizable gift boxes. With its multi-channel strategy and food customization, mymuesli offers a diverse, high-quality organic range of breakfast cereals and complementary products such as healthy snacks and organic leaf teas.
The award-winning food company now sells its products online in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France. It is also available in numerous supermarkets, to reach customers where the story originally began: on the supermarket shelf. And the success story continues.
