About Homey
Homey began with a conviction. A smart home should not be a stack of separate apps, standards, and ecosystems that barely talk to each other. In 2014, founders Emile Nijssen and Stefan Witkamp started building one platform from Enschede that lets devices from any brand work together. Today, it connects lighting, climate, security, energy, and entertainment across all major standards, supported by more than 1500 device apps built with a worldwide developer community.
That openness is the heart of Homey’s differentiation. Where large technology companies build around their own ecosystem, Homey makes them work together. The technology underneath is complex; for the user, it never feels that way. The combination of depth and simplicity carried the brand from a single hub to a full product family, with Homey Pro, Homey Pro mini, a cloud service, and Homey Self-Hosted Server, as well as the Homey Energy Dongle and Homey Portal. Underneath sits Homey OS, the platform that makes this openness possible.
Homey Pro, the flagship hub that runs every automation locally, drives most sales. Products reach customers through retailers and marketplaces, complemented by a growing direct channel. Europe is the core market, with the United States representing an important growth market, while Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore complete the international footprint.
Part of LG Electronics
Athom, the company behind Homey, joined LG Electronics in 2024. Homey operates as a self-funded innovation hub under its own brand, retaining substantial autonomy, while its technology strengthens LG’s position in the global smart home market. LG did not simply buy a Dutch maker of smart home hubs. It bought access to open connectivity, software, and a proven ecosystem that connects products from competing manufacturers. The shared ambition is to grow Homey from a hardware-led business into a global platform company, with software, platform capabilities, and the developer ecosystem as engines alongside the hubs.
The people behind the platform choose Homey for the craft and the independence to exercise it. Around forty specialists, more than half of them in development and design, work in a flat organization built on trust, honesty and open communication, where decisions come quickly and processes stay minimal.
