Sympower works towards a smarter energy future. The scale-up accelerates the global energy transition through its proprietary platform that unlocks flexibility in the energy markets. The Product Design Manager will be responsible for improving the user experience on Sympower’s platform. A key position in speeding up the company’s international expansion.
About Sympower
The shift to a carbon-free future requires adopting renewable technologies as well as a smarter way of managing its unpredictable power output. Sympower’s proprietary technology unlocks the inherent flexibility of electrical assets and processes to balance supply and demand across international electricity networks. This way, Sympower generates new revenue streams for its customers, protects our planet, and accelerates the global transition towards Net Zero.
When customers connect to Sympower’s platform, the automated software identifies, unlocks, and dispatches its available flexibility to different energy markets. And when there is a shortage or surplus of renewable power, the clean-tech scale-up can temporarily control the individual electrical assets of its customers and turn them on, off, up or down. This maximizes green energy utilization and balances the grid.
Sympower’s clients operate in a wide range of energy-intensive industries, including paper and pulp, greenhouses, data centers, the metals industry, manufacturing and cold storage facilities. The scale-up works with power companies throughout Europe, like Vattenfall and the Finnish Väre.
“The climate is changing and the time to prevent irreversible damage to our precious planet is running out. That’s why we help businesses to maximize their renewable energy usage, and enable the transition towards a fully sustainable system.” – Simon Bushell, Founder and CEO
Founded in 2015, Sympower now employs more than eighty people with about twenty-five different nationalities and operates in nine countries including The Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Norway and Israel. The company’s growth plan is to expand into many markets, including Germany, Japan, Italy, Greece, and Spain.
Their strategy is to maintain its impressive growth rate by adding new geographies and launching new technologies, all to accelerate the global energy transition and combat climate change. Recently, Sympower joined the B.Corp community. The B.Corp label certifies their very high standards for social and environmental performance.
To organize for scale, Sympower is expanding its product teams and is changing the teams’ orientation from geography to product. Product Managers will have end-to-end responsibility for their products across markets. They will guide their teams and focus their efforts to maximize customer value creation and contribute to Sympower’s business objectives.
Vacancy: Product Design Manager
The Product Design Manager will be responsible for developing the user experience of Sympower’s platform by combining visual and interaction design. They will become part of Sympower’s growing product organization that forms the bridge between the customers, the business, and the software engineering teams. The Product Design Manager will lead a product design team and work closely together with product managers and engineers to identify the features that will bring the highest value.
“A thoroughly transparent and predictable user experience is a prerequisite for gaining the trust of the customer to steer their operations. With a well thought-out strategy, the Product Design Manager therefore ensures a further acceleration of the energy transition.” – Emile Berckmoes, Head of Product
The Product Design Manager will drive together with the team the product design vision and practice and will design user-flow and (micro-)interactions to enhance the user experience. To do so, they will analyze customer and user behavior and identify opportunities to optimize the usability of the products and features. Part of their responsibility will also be to stay up to date on the latest technologies used in the industry and bring those into Sympower.
Team leadership is a key part of the position. The Product Design Manager will lead the product design team, which currently consists of two Product Designers. Their team management responsibilities include building the team (taking on an active role in the recruitment process), coaching and developing the team members, conducting performance reviews, and supporting the team actively and in a hands-on fashion.
For a Product Design Manager who is customer-focused, has strong stakeholder management skills (internally and externally), and can translate user research into clear insights and designs, this role offers an exciting opportunity to work in an international and fast-paced environment. In addition, they will be able to make a significant contribution to combating climate change.
