History of Koninklijke Van Leeuwen
When Piet van Leeuwen began trading in steel pipes and iron in Zwijndrecht in 1924, he laid the foundations for a company that, a century later, operates worldwide. Thanks to his entrepreneurial spirit, the company grew rapidly. Following the opening of its first overseas branch in Belgium in 1947, the European network expanded steadily, followed by expansion into North America, Asia and Australia. In 2024, Van Leeuwen celebrated its centenary and was awarded the ‘Royal’ designation, in recognition of the organisation’s solid reputation, continuity and international standing.
Growth and acquisitions
Over the past few decades, Koninklijke Van Leeuwen has steadily strengthened its international position through a combination of organic growth and targeted acquisitions. A key step was the acquisition of Benteler Distribution in 2019, which significantly expanded the company’s network and market share in key regions. The company has continued this growth strategy in recent years, with a recent milestone being the acquisition of the German firm C+R Hydraulics in early 2026. Expanding its global presence remains a key driver of the growth strategy.
