Chama is a new mobile app that’s guaranteed to set a market on fire. The start-up is poised to become a high profile industry disruptor with global reach and a customer base in the millions. The two founders have already secured more than € 10 million investment to kickstart Chama. The Customer Strategy Manager will add execution power and intellect to the process of customer creation in Brazil.

A mobile platform start-up with untapped potential

In short, the Chama business model can be described as ‘Uber-for-home-gas-delivery’. In many emerging markets, gas delivery is huge. Take Brazil: each month, 95% of Brazilians order gas to heat their homes and cook their meals. And until now, the trade has been completely offline. Through a network of independent dealers, five major distributors provide 400 million cylinders of gas annually. Chama is the first to digitize the process and give people in emerging markets around the world faster access and more control of their orders. Currently, legal and illegal dealers compete to deliver gas by phone order or from street vendors. There is a clear safety issue with illegal dealers hooking up the cylinders and potentially dangerous consequences. With Chama, consumers can feel safe knowing that only certified, legal dealers are delivering and installing the gas into their family homes. And they can choose their gas delivery by proximity of drivers to their homes, quality or price.

High profile industry disruptor

With the vision to quickly disrupt the residential gas market by offering dealers a better, faster and cheaper way to interact with their customers, Chama has already secured € 50-100 million in financial backing. Vendors use the app to automate their business, access customer data and gain business intelligence into consumers including their user choices. Drivers also use the app to help them deliver the product to homes. It brings transparency for the consumer, levels the playing field among vendors, causes a shake-out of overpriced players in the industry and removes unregulated vendors from the process. Within two years, Chama will reach 10 million customers.

“Chama is Portuguese for ‘little flame’ as well as ‘call me.’ It’s the perfect name. Everyone in Brazil immediately gets the concept and no matter who we talk to, everyone is excited. It’s so simple to grasp and people are very enthusiastic and can’t wait to start using it.” – Read the interview with Founders Marijn van de Ven & Bram Ellens

The Chama consumer app was launched in November 2016 and has already exceeded expectations with an overwhelming number of downloads. Every day more consumers discover the ease of using Chama. And they should, as the next target is 25,000 users and from there the numbers should soar exponentially to reach the 10 million. Meanwhile, on the other end, a tireless and dedicated sales force is hooking up dealers to the platform. Full market coverage in Sao Paolo is well underway, Rio de Janeiro is next.

About the job: Customer Strategy Manager

Intellect, execution power and creativity. That’s what Chama likes to add to the team. Co-founder Marijn van de Ven acts as the General Manager for Brazil during this first phase. He has a great management team around him and is dedicating himself to a clear roadmap with challenging milestones. One of those milestones is the aforementioned 10 million customers. Chama needs big ideas and eye for detail in the implementation to get there. A Strategy Consultant looking to exit into a digital start-up is the ideal profile for the Customer Strategy Manager. The role focuses on performance marketing to create and grow the customer base in Brazil. Applying analytical horsepower and the occasional bit of data science, the Customer Strategy Manager decides on campaigns, channels, target audience, message, testing, look & feel. This means working closely with local agencies, but also taking matters into your own hands where needed. And applying a sense of style, taste and humor to deliver high-quality output. With the base expanding, understanding customer behavior becomes more and more complicated. The Customer Strategy Manager is also tasked with setting up and managing a business intelligence structure for Chama. As with many start-ups, the road ahead is full of unknowns. At this point, Chama could benefit from another strategic thinker in the team. Someone who will not only tackle customer creation issues but also takes part in strategic decision making in other areas. This should also set the Customer Strategy Manager up for a more senior role in the future. This professional reports to the Head of Customer Creation, who is focusing on Brazil for now, but will move on to develop the next country once the Customer Strategy Manager establishes her/himself in Brazil.
