The story of Suitsupply sounds like a dream. In 1997, then 26-year-old law student Fokke de Jong sold suits to his fellow students from his attic room. Contemporary made-to-measure suits with an Italian cut, ditto fabrics and a price tag that the Dutch people love. Three years later, De Jong founded Suitsupply in the form of an online shop, after which he opened his first shop in 2001, and in 2007 he continued his expansion abroad.

Fast forward to 2020. From Los Angeles to Sydney and from Shanghai to Bogotá, the suit label now has more than 125 stores worldwide. And for the past three years, the female customer base has also been able to get their fix at subsidiary Suistudio. Online sales are growing by fifteen percent annually and thanks to a second capital injection from NPM Capital, the company is expanding further in Asia, where Suitsupply is also proving to be a hit.

The Business Controller is best-in-class in cash flow management, allowing Suitsupply to always make accurate predictions. The company is currently in the process of implementing Cashforce, a program that will initially take over the cash flow reporting. The Business Controller is responsible for the process development and takes care of the sanity check of the input. Working meticulously without losing sight of the big picture should therefore be part of this person’s professional DNA.

Suitsupply is an enormous company that’s rapidly expanding. A clear view of the cash position enables the acceleration of this expansion (shops). The Business Controller therefore always ensures a stable cash flow. In addition, this investigative type will find out exactly where future efficiency improvements and cost savings lie. Complex processes in the fields of logistics and IT also deserve attention.

Not only does this person possess excellent technical and Excel skills, he or she is also never afraid to speak up. He or she takes on the business partner role with IT, logistics and the G&A functions and knows exactly how to raise questions whenever they might arise. Moreover, the Business Controller has a great deal of exposure towards both the CEO and CFO. This strong personality therefore possesses an entrepreneurial mindset and is never afraid to stand up for himself/herself. It is equally important that he or she is able to take a vulnerable position and indicate where, for example, there still are uncertainties in forecasts.
