AWS Cloud Data Engineer
No matter your age, everyone leaves Pathé cinemas with a smile. But there’s always room for improvement. And how exactly? That’s what data tells us. By developing a cutting-edge AWS-based data platform, the AWS Cloud Data Engineer will help Pathé implement their ambitious data and cloud strategy, making a night at the movies even more memorable.
With 30 movie theaters and over seventeen million visitors a year, this French family-owned company is the undisputed market leader in the cinema industry. They’ve been leaders from the very beginning, when the Pathé brothers opened the doors of their first cinema in 1896. Their mission: to share the wonderful world of film with as many people as possible. At the time, cinematography was just getting off the ground, and the four brothers were true pioneers. To say that paid off would be an understatement. Thanks to their efforts, Pathé today is not only the Dutch market leader, but also a global producer of films and film equipment. Although Pathé NL is part of the French family business, the organization here operates independently of the head office in Paris.
After nearly 125 years in business, Pathé is still a company that lives out the spirit of the original Pathé brothers, constantly innovating and looking to the long term. Pathé was not only at the birth of film with first sound and then color, the company also helped introduce IMAX, 4DX, and Dolby Cinema. Making sure everyone always has the very best cinema experience is what it’s all about. Pathé is designed for innovation, continuously seeking out new development and optimization opportunities. Data is a crucial asset for encouraging innovation and making the cinema experience even better for customers.
Vacancy: AWS Cloud Data Engineer
A truly memorable visitor experience hinges on a customer data platform that allows Pathé to collect the right data and use it in the most effective, secure way. That’s where the AWS Cloud Data Engineer can truly make a difference. The Amazon customer data platform they will build will allow Pathé to store the enormous amount of data – including data on visitors, financial data, and food & beverage sales – in a secure, efficient, scalable way. Pathé is currently using a variety of data solutions. That works, but doesn’t align with Pathé’s vision: a centralized, scalable, cloud-based data platform.
Once the platform is in place, Pathé’s data practice can be expanded. They’re not short on ambition: there’s a roadmap in place with a (long) list of products and functionalities, like data feeds, dashboards, recommendation engines, and forecasting algorithms still to be developed. The goal is crystal clear: Pathé wants to personalize its digital channels, make better decisions, and do everything they can to serve visitors even better.
Focus on security
The AWS Cloud Data Engineer will take full ownership of setting up and managing the cloud data environment, as well as executing and implementing the roadmap. Security will always be their top priority, alongside process optimization. The AWS Cloud Data Engineer should constantly be looking for ways to improve the platform’s infrastructure around technology, security, and cost-efficiency.
As part of the data team (two data analysts and a data engineer), the AWS Cloud Data Engineer will take the lead on setting up the infrastructure and maintaining the cloud environment. Of course the team will be heavily involved, but the AWS Cloud Data Engineer’s primary role will be as a sounding board for content and intensive collaboration with an external partner, using their tremendous wealth of knowledge and experience around AWS and cloud.
Migration with Pathé Global
There’s also a close collaboration with the data team at their headquarters in France. The AWS Cloud Data Engineer will have regular discussions with them about the impending migration to the Group Digital Platform scheduled for next year. It’s a fantastic milestone in the making, as this integration is going to make it significantly easier to develop new features and functionalities independently. The AWS Cloud Data Engineer will also play an important role in the development of this new platform and future integration. That role does not end post integration. In fact, the AWS Cloud Data Engineer will continue to play a decisive role in Pathé NL’s data innovations moving forward.
“As an AWS Cloud Data Engineer, you can really make a difference here. You bring the knowledge and experience about data and the Cloud and use it to chart our course. If you want to make an impact, Pathé is the right place” – Barry de Bruin, IT Director
The role is a fantastic, at times complex challenge for a passionate data engineer with relevant cloud experience. Someone with passion and drive who can communicate their vision to others in an inspiring, convincing way. Lines of communication are short in Pathé’s flat, informal organization and people are encouraged to take ownership of their work. The AWS Cloud Data Engineer will report to Wouter Gaarenstroom, IT Manager, but will also be in regular contact with Barry de Bruin, IT Director.
Pathé is working with Top of Minds to fill this vacancy.
