About Picnic
Picnic was founded in Amersfoort in 2015 with a simple promise: to allow people to order their groceries via an app, at a fair price, and have them delivered to their homes. The idea was to bring back the traditional milkman to the streets, but with a modern twist. More than ten years later, the company is one of Europe’s fastest-growing online supermarkets, delivering groceries to millions of people in the Netherlands, Germany and France. With the support of investors Edeka and the Gates Foundation, Picnic raised nearly two billion euros in several funding rounds to finance further growth. A new online service, Picnic Kookt, has been launched, with which the company aims to take on meal delivery services.
Sustainable technology company
Behind the app lies a technology company. Picnic builds virtually everything needed to keep the supply chain running itself: two fully automated distribution centres, a fully electric fleet of delivery vans and its own range of over three thousand own-brand products. Sustainability is a key priority: the red Picnic vans follow smart routes, ensuring no unnecessary kilometres are driven and less than one per cent of the food is wasted. In the more than 150 distribution centres and hubs, CO₂ emissions are reduced in various ways, including through solar panels and energy-efficient refrigeration systems. Empty batteries, Nespresso capsules, deposit bottles or SodaStream cylinders can be handed to the delivery drivers to ensure they are recycled.

With over fifteen thousand employees, Picnic has the scale of a large company, but still operates with the energy of a start-up. Hierarchy means little here; ownership means all the more: employees are given responsibility from day one. At the Amsterdam head office, colleagues from over eighty different nationalities and several office dogs work together in a dynamic environment, all focused on that one goal: ensuring that people can easily have healthy food delivered as sustainably as possible.
