Alfen

Alfen develops and manufactures innovative energy solutions and sells them as products or projects. The company has an 80-year history in smart grid solutions and in recent years expanded its portfolio from transformer substations to smart grids, energy storage systems and charging stations for electric cars. This unique combination of activities enables the Almere-based energy specialist to offer integrated solutions to its customers.

Energy for the future

For example, Alfen recently combined its activities in smart grids, charging stations and energy storage in a project for the ADO Den Haag stadium. During the day, the soccer stadium generates energy via solar panels on the roof. This energy is mainly needed to light the stadium at night, but is also used to charge the increasing number of visitors’ electric vehicles. In fact, at peak times there are so many of them that the grid connection was running into capacity problems. With Alfen’s energy storage system, solar energy generated during the day can be used for electric vehicles in the evening and the grid is not overloaded.

Unique Market Position

Alfen has a market-leading position in the Netherlands, is growing rapidly abroad and currently has about 300 employees. In 2017, the company turned around 74 million euros in revenue, about three-quarters of which came from smart grid solutions and a quarter from charging stations and smart energy storage. These three product lines give Alfen a unique market proposition. The company has formidable competition on every independent product, but no other player in Europe offers integrated total solutions like Alfen.
